How to Save Instagram Photos in Original Quality

A complete guide to downloading Instagram photos, carousel posts, and profile pictures in their original resolution without lossy compression.

How to Save Instagram Photos in Original Quality

Instagram is a highly visual platform hosting billions of photographs, illustrations, and digital designs. However, if you've ever tried to save a photo from Instagram using typical methods—such as taking a screenshot—you've probably noticed a significant drop in sharpness and clarity.

Instagram uses aggressive image compression algorithms to save bandwidth and ensure fast page load times. Screenshots compound this issue by capturing only your screen's current resolution rather than the actual image file.

In this guide, we'll explain how Instagram processes images and show you how to extract and save Instagram photos in their original, uncompressed quality.

How Instagram Compresses Photos

When a creator uploads a high-resolution photo, Instagram's system automatically resizes and compresses it. Here is what happens:

  • Maximum Width: Instagram caps the width of images at 1080 pixels. Even if you upload a 4K image, it is scaled down.
  • Aspect Ratio: If your photo's aspect ratio isn't supported (it should be between 1.91:1 and 4:5), Instagram crops it.
  • Lossy Compression: The platform applies JPEG compression, which discards subtle color details to shrink the file size.

Taking a screenshot of a compressed image on a phone screen means you get a double-compressed version. To get the cleanest copy, you must download the highest resolution file cached on Instagram's content delivery network (CDN).

Methods to Save Original Quality Photos

Method 1: Using CoraClip Photo Downloader (Easiest)

CoraClip scans the page metadata to locate the direct CDN link of the highest resolution file available on Instagram's servers (usually 1080px wide).

  1. Copy the Photo URL:
    • In Instagram, tap the three dots (...) at the top right of the post.
    • Tap Copy Link.
  2. Paste into CoraClip:
  3. Save Image:
    • CoraClip will show a preview of the photo.
    • Tap or click Download Image. The file will save as a high-quality JPG directly to your device.

Method 2: Browser Inspect Element (Advanced, PC only)

If you are on a computer and do not want to use external tools, you can extract the image URL from the webpage's source code:

  1. Go to the Instagram post in your desktop browser.
  2. Right-click the image and select Inspect (or press F12).
  3. In the HTML tree, look for a div element covering the image. You will see an img tag with a srcset attribute.
  4. The srcset contains multiple URLs for different image resolutions. Copy the URL that ends before the 1080w descriptor (this is the 1080px version).
  5. Paste that URL into a new browser tab, right-click, and select Save Image As.

Note: Instagram frequently updates its code structure to make finding direct links via Inspect Element difficult, making web-based utilities a much easier alternative.

How to Save Instagram Carousels (Multiple Photos)

A carousel post contains up to 10 photos or videos in a single slideshow. Standard downloading methods often only grab the first image.

CoraClip is fully equipped for carousel downloads:

  • When you paste a carousel link, CoraClip scans the entire post.
  • It displays all images and videos from the carousel as a neat list.
  • You can download them individually or choose the specific ones you need, all in full resolution.
